Biden has turned out to be a remarkably Strangeglovian figure versus who we thought in 2019 was an "Uncle Joe". Vicious and vindictive on enemies foreign and domestic.
What he said about MAGA yesterday, word-for-word, could be turned around more accurately to reflect his own philosophy (my flips in brackets other than pronoun changes):
"What we’re seeing now, is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme [leftist] philosophy. It’s not just my administration, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the—I’m going to say something, it’s like semi-fascism….
Our [intel community and leftists] don’t just threaten personal rights and economic security…We’re a threat to our very democracy. We refuse to accept the will of the people. We embrace…political violence [such as the BLM riots]. We don’t believe in democracy….
This is why in this moment, those of you who love this country—[Republicans], Independents, mainstream [Democrats]— must be stronger…
It’s not hyperbole. Now you need to vote to literally save democracy again."
I'm thinking Biden can be read in three potential ways:
a) He completely signs off on whatever his aides want, although this is inconsistent with how much pride he has, and how insistent that everyone know how intelligent he is, how he wants to be another FDR and was envious of Obama’s popularity.
b) He has the knowledge that we are already in a cold civil war and is simply acting accordingly, that is, on war-footing. He’s simply awake to the fact that his side took out a president (Trump) and so there’s no going back. It’s all for keeps.
c) He’s literally spent his whole adult life so close to power and yet so far away. No doubt he felt the pent-up frustration of forty years and now wants to make up for all the time he was subservient to the younger Obama or dependent on fellow senators. In short, he’s not here to be a caretaker. But this doesn't explain why he uses his power left-centrically, not reaching out to the GOP.
So unfortunately option B seems like the most likely explanation.
Perhaps the answer to Biden’s war on half of America is related to our leaders' general disposition to fight when feeling vulnerable and weak. A British commentator tweeted: “The US didn't start trade war with China which failed spectacularly and to seek to provoke a war with Taiwan and to provoke Russia into a war with Ukraine and seek to crush Putin and Russian economy from a position of strength. It is because US is now vulnerable and weak.”
