I wonder why
so many Marian statues
are said to be weeping.

I want to say:
‘cheer up Mary,
you’re in Heaven!'

It's not like the commercials
where the sportsman smiles,
says 'I'm going to Disney World!'

She cries the tears
her son had asked
‘Do not weep for me,
weep for your children’

We are her children.

Religious sentiment, they say,
is the partner of pornography--

to quote the late Flannery O'.

But oh it's not so with Mary
where sentiment isn't sentimental
emotions aren't chimeras
and love is real.
