Altar Over War
Scott Hahn, in his talk at the Coming Home Conference, said that the spiritual life is a war, a battlezone, but then added, “or rather an altar”. The latter seems a more uplifting positive image. War seems a pointless test of our manhood while an altar is a place where something productive rather than destructive is going on. On a altar the sacrifice is objectively useful. Every man who hasn’t been to war wonders how he would perform (and many who have been think they could’ve done more) – and yet that’s all indicative of the self-focus that is natural to testing. But an altar is intrinsically other-focused, a trade in which we can benefit others.
