Ancestors, I take on faith,
for the past be a foreign country
which I would tread with reverence
for my grandmother's sake.

Handsome girls pillar left and right,
wit sits upon their brows;
Latinate resuscitations flourish,
nineteenth-centurians fetching
as Keatsian Merediths.

Honest faces have the men!
Dandy-dressed,
gazes direct and open
as their satellite ears;
strong Catholic men
guileless as Nathaniel.
