The Acceptable Sacrifice

Why then?
I pondered,
as they changed on a dime,
zero-to-60 in apostolic zeal
post-Pentecost.

It was so different
than I'd always imagined:
not the cozy twelve plus Mary
with the tongues of fire
consoling the elite in the Upper Room.
"Is there a flame above my head?"
they might ask their neighbor.

No, it wasn't like that.
There were 120 in that room,
a Spirit conflagration for the masses
and not just the few,
for this was the completed raising of Christ,
the confirmation that now when the Father sees us
he sees His Son,
the Acceptable Sacrifice.
