Olympic Musings
Been enjoying the Bejing games for some reason, since I've hardly watched any Olympics since 1984. A few stray thoughts...Caught an interview between Costas and George W. Bush and Bush seemed awfully casual about China and its evils. Is the great idea - that engagement would change behavior - really working? It's certainly working with China's economy which is booming beyond ken, but what about slave labor and religious freedom? On the other hand, Bush said, with twinkly eyes, that those who are of a religious nature know that (paraphrase) once Christianity is introduced it tends to take off. Hopefully Christianity, rather than engagement, will change the country.
Been following the woman gymastics. The girls each seem to have such distinct and separate personalities. Of course Shawn Johnson is irresistable but my favorite is Bridget Sloan. She seems a genuinely nice gal. Watching the balance beam routine you get the feeling these girls, no matter how drunk, could ace any field sobriety test.
The interviews with gruff but loveable Boris Karlof (sp?) were priceless. Turns out the Commie judges are back, under new forms of government but just as corrupt.
The synchronized diving routine is pretty cool. Hard enough diving that way as an individual, hard to believe two can do it in synch. One American diver has a fear of hieghts, even to this day, and won't jump off the high platform. Says she has to be diving so it'll distract her as she's going down. Makes sense to me! (Maybe she could drink a Guinness on the way down. That might work for me.)
