Office Space

So this was the week of the move and I’m greatly relieved by it. I’m situated well, thanks to a late-game swap with a generous co-worker. I feel beholden such that I probably should offer her the extra Walmart plant I bought for $20.

It’s a clean well-lighted place. Emphasis on well-lighted; S.A.D. no more. Most of all it’s some points distant from an incredibly loud co-worker.

Just south of me sit two so quiet that I’m the loud one! Whoda thunk it? Talking to my co-worker across the aisle, the pretty Asian girl at seven o'clock turned towards me and I apologized and moved my chair over to Ben’s place. The loud are always the last to know, you know. She was very sweet and appreciative in response.

Every now and then in the new place I get the feeling that I had in my old office, which is primarily the ability to concentrate.

The restrooms are beautiful and there’s even an extra unisex one. I’m not unisex but I used it anyway today since the men’s room was full and there’s always the pleasant frissure of breaking a taboo in doing so.

The 180-degree desk surface gives the appearance of honey oak. The Walmart plant is consolingly green and provides a bit more privacy in an area of particular vulnerability. Various postcards and framed photos dot the firm grasp of cube wall, mainly of Ireland and libraries. A payroll calendar too, juxtaposed with a work document lest the powers that be think I’m only in it for a paycheck. A religious calendar so I can prepare for the onslaught of Lent by living it up until then.

In other words, the typical ornamentation.

What civility does the new cube space confer! Once again I can enjoy the sublime pleasure of early morning coffee under the drunkenness of fatigue without the gesticulations and loud gutteral indencies of a particular co-worker who shan’t be mentioned. :-)

Oh, and did I mention there's a whiteboard too?

Hooray for you in escaping the noisy colleague. I've got 1 1/2 of them and they drive me bats.

The really noisy one is quite a piece of work. Yesterday around 3 o'clock I heard her say she was taking next week off. Made my day . . . until I figured out that she was in her boss' office with the door closed (about 50 feet away) and that she would then be going around to each other office and cube to repeat the same spiel until at least 4:30.

The noisy half-colleague is in a
neighboring department and I don't hear her when she's in her department, but we share a breakroom and a passageway to the main part of the hospital. If I'm in her line of sight when she blurts something out, I do a Cosmo Krameresque double-take, but it doesn't seem to have registered with her yet. It does make other people laugh, though, so it's worth something.

Yeah I can't be too upset over my overly exuberant co-worker since he seems to put people in a better mood. ('Cept mine.)
