The desire to write the Great Midwestern Novel, or more precisely, the Great Central-Ohio-North-of-Interstate-70 novel, is hardwired into me despite my general preference for non-fiction in my reading and writing. I think it's due in part to the influence of living in a world that only values reality, where reality is defined in narrow, hyper-rationalistic terms. But the yearning lingers even though the problem with the markerboard is that it's a medium that doesn't lend itself to novels. For one thing there is the space limitation. I don't think I could get more than 3,000 legible words on it. For another, the audience for the whiteboard is expecting something soundbyte-y or pictorial. For example, here is a co-worker's pluperfect use of markerboard:
Yes I do have a bit of "markerboard envy", even though he did admit he stole the idea off a website. That seems dirty pool, does it not?
Another worker, nearing retirement, has a simple sequence of sentences:
80 months till:The "_______" is a variable and is occasionally filled in by rogue markerboarders volunteering the home of a fellow colleague.
retirement?
nursing home?
stay at _______'s?
No $$ left, too much Vegas?

The pie chart is perfect. And it applies to the very large whiteboard that we use in our school corner. (I was aghast when my children, about 12 or 15 years ago, hauled it out of someone's pile of treasures on refuse day. But it has really been a good thing to have.)
May I use this as a place to share that cheap acetone-based nail polish remover works well on non-erasable markings that may show up on these boards? Maybe I'm the only one who has these problems, but I doubt it!
I like it also because now I don't have to use post-it notes as little reminders. I feel so green these days, what with my Amazon Kindle and now the markerboard. I also found out I'm much greener than Obama, who keeps the Whitehouse thermostat at 77 degrees while we're around 68. Course Obama is skinnier & comes from Hawaii so I have to cut him some slack.
77 degrees? Are they crazy???
Well, just wait til Michelle gets a little older and starts in with those feminine related warmth issues. The temp will drop real fast!
