He Even Looks Like a Former Philadelphian

Quote o' the day by Rich Russo: "You can't just call them an idiot because that won't get you anywhere." I can't argue with that.

Spoken by a true-blue Columbus hockey fan; full column here:
I would submit that Russo's choice of seats, there behind the visitors' bench, is one of the more fortunate turns in franchise history. Granted, franchise history is not swathed in glory, so the bar isn't set too high here. But the point is, if someone was going to sit behind the opposing bench, who better than a moke from Staten Island who went to college in Philadelphia? Think about it: a New York-Philly hybrid, a cross between Mel Blanc and W.C. Fields, stationed at the immediate rear of the enemy. It's practically unfair.

"I get under their skin a lot," Russo said. "It's funny. Like, I'll ask (Edmonton's Ales) Hemsky why his mom would name a boy Alice. Stuff like that. They'll turn around, if you know their first name and you know something about them and you say something pretty smart hockey-wise. You can't just call them an idiot because that won't get you anywhere."

Uncounted times, Russo has gotten a gush of Gatorade from the other side of the glass. Darius Kasparaitis launched smelling salts (nasty stuff). Todd Bertuzzi turned to punch the glass (and evoked some fear). Jeremy Roenick, harangued about his gambling habits, was asked about the state of his finances. He turned, smiled and said, "I'm still rich, buddy."
