My Over-Simplified Theory of What Went Wrong

We started to unravel during the '50s. What happened? Here's a short, ten-second theory:

American Catholicism had been invigorated and revitalized and dominated by a diaspora of devoted Irish priests who came to America in the years during and after the Great Famine. The famine had helped trigger a "devotional revolution" in Ireland. By the 1950s, the influence of that devotional revolution had abated; the "spiritual capital" had been spent.
